Two-Timing the Cosmos: “Dear Heather, we at Apple don't care about you or your stupid computer problems”
http://twotimingthecosmos.blogspot.com/2005/05/dear-heather-we-at-apple-dont-care.html Ugh. Very sorry to hear about your Apple support troubles. I've had some good and some bad w/Apple support over the years, but the bad can seem really bad. I hope they actually fix it this time. So what's this about not being able to use a Mac for the Bar? Which Bar are you taking? Are most states like that?Posted by mowabb at 08:14 PM

Evan Schaeffer's Legal Underground: Week Law-School Roundup:
http://www.legalunderground.com/2005/05/the_weekly_laws.html I am Unable to Compete with the High Level Discourse on this Thread, but I WILL say that the Weekly Law School Roundup coexisted with Blawg Review Happily for a few Weeks and I am Confident it Could Continue to do so, Especially with the Capable Aid of E. Spatula and Dave!. I Am Not Personally Involved In Anything.Posted by mowabb at 06:22 AM

Blonde Justice: Who Will Be The First, In This Race Around The World?
http://blondejustice.blogspot.com/2005/05/who-will-be-first-in-this-race-around.html Sorry, I didn't vote b/c I didn't see your poll 'til after the show. And what a show! I was on the edge of my seat for most of it. I'm thrilled with the outcome, although I thought R&A's “catty” or “shady” play was just what the show needs to give it some spice and make it exciting. It's a *race!* For a *million dollars!* But the winners could hardly have been more deserving. I just thought they were going to lose it all for the sake of $25 of cab fair and I just wanted to grab the tv and shake them through it --“go freaking plant your feet on the mat, win the million, borrow $40 from Phil and pay the damn cab driver! Just GO GET ON THE MAT!!!” Sorry. I was getting a little excited. I will miss R&A. If it hadn't been for the freaking king of havana! Oh, and I'm ignoring the fact that they're getting married on tv. I just hope they're getting paid well for that, but knowing Rob, I bet they are.Posted by mowabb at 12:02 AM

Life, Law, Gender: Oooh! I'm famous!
http://musingsonlifelawandgender.typepad.com/life_law_gender/2005/05/oooh_im_famous.html We're cool w/you, too, Denise, and it's great to see that Chirs is, too. I really appreciate what you've done/are doing w/this site -- being candid about your transition and standing up to irrational prejudice where you see it. I really think it's this kind of thing -- on a massive scale -- that exposes fear and prejudice for what they are and make them unacceptable to soceity. One person at a time is really the only way to change anything, isn't it?Posted by mowabb at 12:20 PM

Just Playin': Bathroom Etiquette

DCJohn Flickr page: running with it
http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcjohn/3492422/?#comment3447479 I find again and again that my favorite shots are the ones I thought were more or less throwaways when I was taking them. If I intentionally try to “capture” something or take a certain shot, it's generally disappointinng or just plain crap. If I just snap off a pic w/out thinking too much about it, I almost think odds are better I'm going to like it. For me this has a lot to do w/being a rank amateur. For people who know what they're doing, I'm thinking intention can be more useful.Posted by mowabb at 07:27 AM

buzzwords: Why I'd Come Back to Alaska
http://tonguebutnodoor.net/monica/archives/001617.html It sounds like you have lots of great reasons for loving it up there, both personally and professionally. From what you've said, it certianly does sound like the ultimate place to start a legal career -- at least a criminal defense career. I haven't heard anything like the great stuff about anywhere else, but I'll admit I haven't heard much about other places at all. I wish there was a way to get an inside look at more jurisdictions so decisions like this would be easier to make. I wonder if there's any resource for that anywhere... Have I mentioned how jealous I am of your experience up there? I'd say we might be in competition for the same jobs a year from now, but I'm still finding it hard to figure out how I could deal w/being so far from family -- both mine and my girlfriend's. Her family is already saying that she'd be insane even to live as far from them as Montana, so Alaska would be like moving to the moon, as far as they're concerned. We'll see. But I guess my main point is this: I've loved working around DC where I worked last summer and will be working again this summer. The attorneys are awesome, the office is laid back, it's only funded ok so resources are a little tight, but not bad. The prosecutors are mostly ok and generally (sort of) seem committed to doing the right thing rather than just nailing ever D to the wall. The attorneys all eat lunch together every day and talk about cases and many of them hang out frequently after work and socialize on weekends occasionally and it's all around a great place to be, both personally and professionally. However, the huge difference is the amount of responsibility and autonomy they give to interns -- it's not even close to what you've had, and therefore it's nowhere near as useful to a law student. We also don't get to go to Talkeetna and see if Denali is out. ;-)Posted by mowabb at 12:50 PM

thisdarkqualm » Cavity Creeps
http://thisdarkqualm.com/index.php?p=173 You are not wrong, but there's probably not a lot you can do other than make yourself such a pain in corporate's ass that they just wipe away that little bill rather than have to deal with you. That might not be possible now that they're talking collections. Now you could wait for the stupid thing to go to collections; once you get a collections notice, you have 30 days to notify the collection agent *in writing* (preferably by certified mail so you can be sure they'll open it) that you dispute the charge; they are legally obligated to investigate and verify the charge and they are not supposed to report it as a bad debt (to credit reporting agencies, or CRAs) during that time. Some collection agents hate this process so much that they just send the debt back to the biller, at which point you would have created a pain for corporate and you could call every day and hassle them patiently until they see things your way. Oh, if you do this, call the collection agent frequently to check on the status of things; if they do send the debt back to the biller, you'll want to call the biller ASAP to try to get them to drop it. You could also take them to small claims court, but um, your time is worth more than that. Another response: Spread bad publicity all over Chambana about the way this business treated you poorly and make sure all of UIUC knows not to get work done there. ;-)Posted by mowabb at 08:57 AM

From Engineer To Lawyer: i would like a dull moment, please
