Don't be sad, K! Give the firms the finger and go do something else! Non-profits and other forms of public interest practice (i.e., gov't work) are much more family friendly -- no billable hours! You might not make a mint, but if satisfaction in your work is important to you, you apparently already understand that a law firm is not the place for you. p.s.: For those who are not subscribed to the NY Times, the article is still available here.
