NaNoWriMo
It's back... almost. November is National Novel Writing Month, which means NaNoWriMo is just around the corner. Want to write a novel in a month? (A "novel" is considered complete at 50,000 words, for purposes of NaNoWriMo.) It's grrrreat fun! I only made it to 30,000 words or so last year, but it was the most fun I'd had with words in a long timeand that's saying something, really, considering all the reading and writing I do. Besides, would you rather:
- Listen to a pompous windbag tell you not to write a novel? or....
- Listen to a quirky writer tell you that anyone can write a novel?
Choice 2 please. And why wait? Sign up now! You weren't planning anything for November, anyway, were you?

Wow... just read Epstein's piece. How obnoxious can one guy get?

No kidding. At the very least he could have acknowledged the naked self-interest behind writing such a piece for the NYT. The fewer books people attempt to publish, the great chance his 15 books will have of finding an audience (at least theoretically). How appropriate that his latest title is Snobbery. I won't be reading it.
The great thing about NaNoWriMo is that it's not about publishing -- it's about writing. Writing is the only thing that makes a writer; publishing is something else altogether. That's another thing Epstein might have acknowledged by saying, "By all means, write your book, but don't do it because you hope to be published and read, because you'll likely be disappointed." That's good advice; writing for writing's sake (rather than for the sake of publishing) will probably be of a higher quality, anyway (and if it sucks, who cares?).
