Notes for Votes
"Let no medium go unsaturated" seems to be the motto of this year's election season. First it was the web w/the campaign blogs, flash animations, dueling videos, and convention bloggers, and now it's all about the music. First there's the Future Soundtrack of America from the MoveOn PAC featuring 22 big songs for only a $25 donation to the MoveOn PAC. Then there's Rock Against Bush, Volume II, featuring 28 crazy punk rockers for only $6! I hope this kind of thing catches on; I could get used to this.

Yeah, this is definitely a cool sort of thing to see happening. The Left in this country is definitely becoming more savvy about this sort of marketing of politics. But that's exactly the problem with it as well; it's a marketing of politics that leads to checkbook activism in the worst case. Could you draw a parallel between this sort of thing and the commercialization of the blogsphere you mention above? There really isn't much difference. Still, I'll buy anything that will help get Bush out of office and build groups with grass roots impact like MoveOn.org. And when Springsteen sounds off as with the ACT tour, well, man you know shit's going down. He wasn't this vocal about El Salvador! And that was Reagan!
Aesthetically speaking, I gotta admit though that I didn't really dig the first Rock Against Bush. Too friggin' uneven. Maybe the second volume will be somewhat better. What I'm really lookin forward to is John Fogerty's new album this fall. Maybe Deja Vu (All Over Again) will tear it up over Iraq like Fortunate Son did over Vietnam. I post the lyrics for the song (from Fogerty's website at http://www.johnfogerty.com/main.php) below.
DEJA VU (ALL OVER AGAIN)
Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you try to read the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again
Day by day I hear the voices rising
Started with a whisper like it did before
Day by day we count the dead and dying
Ship the bodies home while the networks all keep score
Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Could your eyes believe the writing on the wall
Did that voice inside you say I've heard it all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again
One by one I see the old ghosts rising
Stumblin' 'cross Big Muddy
Where the light gets dim
Day after day another Momma's crying
She's lost her precious child
To a war that has no end
Did you hear 'em talkin' 'bout it on the radio
Did you stop to read the writing at The Wall
Did that voice inside you say
I've seen this all before
It's like Deja Vu all over again
It's like Deja Vu all over again
