Movie Daze
I've watched many movies in the last few days as part of finals decompression and just generally because I haven't had the energy or focus to do much else. Here's what I've seen recently:
- Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle: See it. Funny funny funny, combined with some biting social commentary mainly having to do w/racism, xenophobia, and various social stereotypes, plus more funny funny funny.
- Hotel Rwanda: Another must-see, if you haven't already. Don Cheadle is awesome. This movie is the opposite of funny. It's a blinding indictment of global politics, and especially the “Western world.” And it's happened/happening again in Darfur.
- The Final Cut: Possibly the worst movie ever. Do not see this. Trust me. The concept might have been good, but the execution? No.
- Garden State: Loved it. Sweet, funny, awkward, but definitely time well spent.

Millions. Fantastic story about two British kids who find a bag of money. By the guy who did Trainspotting. Good music, great cinematography, perfect fantastical elements...just see it.

You liked Harold and Kumar? I was ready to shoot myself about 20 minutes in. The only good part (IMO) was the bit with Doogie Howser.

I just watched Closer. I want my $4 back.
And I'm just starting my finals period...

I highly recommend going out to the theater and seeing "Sin City," if you haven't already.

millions is indeed great. another interesting one is "closer". not a cheery fun film, but an interesting story nonetheless. i also liked "step into liquid", "riding giants" (two surfer movies) and "dogtown and z boys" (a movie about the birth of modern skateboarding). those last three are just plain fun.

Hitchhiker's was okay -- not great, not a disgrace. I think it was sort of not blindingly funny for people already familiar with the jokes from the books, but not a coherent enough reconstruction of the book to induct a new audience into Adams's humor. There were two sequences which really popped on the big screen. My final verdict is go to the theater if you can get a matinee or other cheap ticket, otherwise wait for the DVD.
