So tired of Moveable Type!
This site and others living on the same shared server have been down much more often than usual recently. Last night I got an email from Dreamhost saying that part of the recent problems is that my account has been using about 120 CPU minutes/day—twice what Dreamhost considers acceptable for a user on a shared server. A quick look at the logs shows that something close to 80% of that usage comes from two Moveable Type scripts—the scripts for comments and trackbacks. Thanks to an array of plugins (so many I can hardly keep track of them all), I haven't seen much trouble w/blog spam for a while—almost none of it makes it through to the blog. Unfortunately, just because I don't see it, doesn't mean it's not there. Thanks to MT 3.2's new “junk” system (in which comments get “junked” if they're spam, rather than being rejected), the spammers can still flood the system with comments and trackbacks. The filters will make sure I don't see it, but all that spam is still slamming the server.
So what to do? Close comments? Trackbacks are gone already. I've rarely found them very useful so I don't think I'll miss them. Close comments on old entries? Yes, ok, but the tools available for that all seem a little cumbersome for a blog w/1400 entries. Other than changing the name of the comment script on a regular basis (a hassle, at best), I'm just not sure what to do.
There was a time when playing w/all this blog stuff was just fun. When problems like this would arise I saw it as a little excuse to tinker and learn more about these things. But now I'm feeling a little more irritated by this sort of thing. Blogger/blogspot or even Typepad are looking better all the time. Is it time to move to WordPress?

Minor quibble: if Trackbacks are disabled, can you remove the URL from your template so people won't legitimately try to use them?
That said, I use WordPress, and a while back I tried renaming my comments and trackback scripts to some random alphanumerics. It did not noticeably reduce the spam load.
I'm not sure how the popularity of my site compares to yours (though the spam load is what matters, right?), but I'm seeing about 5 minutes of CPU time daily by php.cgi.

Good point about the tags in the template. I will do that in the next redesign, which should be soon.
You're right that site popularity doesn't seem to be the issue -- it's just whether spammers are hitting the script. This MT install has over a dozen blogs on it so it's hard for me to tell what's drawing the most attention, although they seem to like Blawg Wisdom. Anyway, the trackback script alone used about 110 CPU minutes yesterday, and the comments script used just over 25 CPU minutes. If I could get those numbers down to 5 each (for 10 total), I think we'd have no problems. But the point is well taken -- WordPress may not be a solution. My impression is that it's just more clean and efficient in how it works so even if the spam continued it wouldn't be such a big problem. I might be completely wrong about that. Anyone have thoughts there?

Oh, I hadn't considered multiple sites being hosted. In that case, yeah, WordPress isn't going to help you much. Maybe Blogger is the way to go. Another possibility would be getting a second Dreamhost account. I guess it'd be a pain to administer, and you'd be looking at an additional $7.95 a month (at least).
If you're not accepting trackbacks, why not just rm the trackback script? No need to process them if they're all rejected.

I agree, it's seriously annoying. I'd look for more than quick-fixes, but when I graduate, all comments will be pulled. (Either that or when I pass the bar, go figure.)
One thing that I found cut down spam by about 20% or more, if you have a few seconds. There are one or two spammers who target only one or two of my entries (for reasons that elude me). I changed the filename of the entry, rebuilt it, and then deleted the old file. (Doing that last is very important, since MT won't do it for you.) So long as it's an entry that doesn't get a lot of inbound traffic (other than spammers) you should be OK.
Pain in the neck, though, and that "pruning" has to be done ever few months.

I strongly recommend b2evolution.
Works great, especially for multiple blogs. Plus it is much less of a server drain than MT.

Well, I just upgraded to Wordpress 2.+. It's very slick, with lots of plugins and an active development community. I notice too that the new version has an import tool that is supposed to import posts and comments from MT.

Anthony: When you say you're going to pull all comments at some point, do you mean you're going to delete the blog or just shut it down? I'm starting to see the wisdom in shutting it down and deleting the comment and trackback scripts. My temporary measures here (deleting the trackback script and changing the name of the comment script) have worked magic, but I know it's only temporary...
Washburn: I know -- WP is like a breath of fresh air. If I switch, I won't worry about importing. I'll just leave this MT blog as an archive and start fresh.
