ambivalent comment

I like your optimism that the honor system on the St. Louis metro is some sort of conscious choice by local government to help mitigate the negatives of poverty and racial segregation. You may very well be right. However, the cynic in me says that this may also be a great way for the local gov't and the middle and upper class citizens of St. Louis to make sure the lower class has a way to get to work every day in order to serve the privileged who don't ride the metro -- to make and serve their food, clean their houses, pick up their garbage, and perform all the other myriad services the middle and upper classes require. I don't really know anything about St. Louis, so I could be completely wrong. And like I said, I prefer your optimism....
