What's “must-see” in the mid-Atlantic region?
Hey traveling people, I need your help: What places and things should I visit in the next 5 weeks before I leave this part of the country for good?
See, it looks like we'll be moving at the end of May—where has yet to be decided. Yeah, we decided when to move before we decided where. Sound crazy? That's just how we roll.
But wherever we end up moving, it's going to be pretty far from the D.C. area, which means there's no time like the present to make sure we've done and seen as much of that area as possible. So I ask you: What mid-Atlantic places would you put on your “must-see” list? Things I know I still want to do before I go include:
- Arlington Cemetery and the Iwo Jima Memorial
- Baltmore—harbor, aquarium, and what else?
- Colonial Williamsburg, VA
- Some beach in Delaware or Maryland maybe (I haven't been to the Atlantic coast once since we moved here!)
- ??
I'm obviously thinking of things that aren't too far from D.C. -- daytrips, a few hours of driving at most, probably. I was thinking about heading down to the lighthouses in NC but they are 300-400 miles away, which is definitely pushing it. Still, if there are must-see places at such distances from D.C., please let me know about them. We might be able to fit in a short multi-day roadtrip somewhere in there. And if not, at least we'll have a list of things to do some other time when we make it back this way. Thanks!

For a romantic (though slightly pricey) getaway: the Hope and Glory Inn. It's a lovely place, has a great restaurant around the corner, and is on the way (back) to/from Williamsburg, Va. on Virginia's beautiful Northern Neck.
Only a short drive north is Lancaster, Pa.; a perfect mix of idyllic countryside and an arts-driven urban core (see here and here, Lancaster has the best of both worlds. Lots of great galleries, restaurants/pubs, and a slower pace make it a great place to visit for a day or two. The baseball team kicks off its season this Friday, too.

I'd say the skyline drive in the shenendoah mts. When I went, I took 66 west toward Winchester, followed the drive south to charlottesville then back on 29 toward DC.
Also the drive to Harper's Ferry is nice or to Gettysburg.
Annapolis is neat and pretty easy to get to.
In Baltimore, I'd catch a game at Oriole Park/Camden Yards.

Gettysburg and/or Bull Run (and Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville probably aren't that far either).
Monticello (Jefferson's Home)
And if you haven't been to all of the Smithsonian museusm, you should do that too.

I would definitely pick Charlottesville (and Monticello) over Colonial Williamsburg--I've lived both places and C.W. is worth stopping in only if you're on the way to some place else. I promise.

Ditto the above -- especially Skyline Drive and Annapolis.
Plus, Philadelphia, New York City (unless it's beyond the zone), Lancaster County (PA, Amish Country -- but on your way elsewhere), maybe Mt. Vernon? And if you haven't done all the monuments/memorials (Washington Monument, WWII, FDR, Korean War, etc.), then they are a must-see in DC.

West Virginia! The eastern panhandle is one of the most beautiful places in the world, as far as this Mountaineer is concerned. :)
Also, if you're considering a beach in Delaware, Rehobeth's ok, but you could take the Lewes ferry to Cape May NJ (the southernmost place in New Jersey), and it's an awesome old antique-y resort town.
Speaking of New Jersey, you're probably going to miss out on Philadephia. That's sad; Philly's fun.

Go see Gettysburg NOW before the idiots have their way and build a casino there. The battlefield is so well-kept and dignified. Skip most of the museums; the Electric Map is decent, though. Rent a tape/CD for a car-tour of the battlefield, or do it on horseback if you ride. It's a history buff's must-do site.

Assateague and Chincoteague for the best of the Mid-Atlantic Atlantic. You can camp on the beach, and of course there are the wild mustangs!
